mast raising

We have a 19 step method that I have documented in a recipe for raising and an 18 step for lowering. The support pole is a 2-pipe sliding arrangement that hangs on the rudder pintles. The upper end is a U-shaped bracket with a bow roller in it. We can slide the upper pole up and down and pin it in p...

bottom paint

We use VC17m (red). We do a power wash on haul-out, light sanding by hand in the spring to smooth out any rough spots and then a new coat. After that dries (20 minutes max), we hand sand with 900 or 1200 grit to burnish the surface. We scrub the bottom every 2 weeks after mid-July.

keel fit

Louise, From a 10-page letter from S2 about 7.9 specifics (I am not sure of where I got this document, but it is similar to the 13-page letter), I quote: 'The trunk is tapered at the bottom, as is the centerboard (at the top) to enable these two components to "key" together when the center...

backstay adjuster

Bob, I'll do some measuring over the weekend for line size and the exact locations on the transom and cockpit sides for the block locations. I think the line is Sta-setX but more important is low stretch and the right color so as not to confuse with the traveler. I think the cheek block and cam clea...

double ended backstay controls

Bob, We use a 4:1 double ended setupon Hot Tamale (#477). I'll try to go through the rig in a sane way, but if you have further questions, contact me. We have a ring with 4 blocks on it, 2 are wire blocks that run on the split backstay, the other 2 are Harken singles (I can get the size on my next v...

S2 7.9 in Sailing World

Tom,
Thanks for the good coverage of our beloved 7.9 in SW. I know that our boat has appreciated since we bought it in '94. A strong class association and good racing are the main reasons.

dual line mainsheet

Tom,
We haven't seen a need for one on Hot Tamale yet but the Catalina 320 I distance race on has a 2-speed set up that is 6:1/12:1. It is very useful for the fine trimming we do after a tack.
Thanks,
